Toyota Prado Vs Hyundai Terracan

This is a brief comparison between the Toyota Prado and the Hyundai Terracan. I put this page up so that you can compare purely for personal interest reasons - also because the Terracan has been discontinued worldwide.

The Toyota Prado and the Hyundai Terracan where comparable in prior years, in particular with the pre-2002 Mitsubishi Pajero which it shares the same basic platform or architecture and engines. But the Hyundai Terracan had various issues which meant it wasn't a very popular model. Nevertheless it can be purchased in the used market.

The Hyundai Terracan was dated in all ways except for its engines which where state of the art. Not surprisingly there where essentially Mitsubishi engines.

Specification and price comparison data is listed below.

However as years have past Hyundai has also moved on and quality in every way including specific engines and suspension have improved even for the same model.

Hyundai have not announced a replacement for the Terracan at the time this article was posted.

Note that specifications will change according to the trim models available and additional or less accessories. You should check the official Hyundai website for your country for the most up to date information.

2010 Toyota RAV4

For 2010, the popular Toyota RAV4 compact sport utility vehicle expands the availability of some key, high-value features first offered on select grades for 2009. The base model now offers the backup monitor system with rear-view camera and monitor integrated into the electrochromic mirror. This feature was introduced for the Sport and Limited grades for 2009.

The Toyota RAV4 had gained a new four-cylinder engine, revised styling and interior upgrades for 2009. For 2010, the comprehensive Sport Appearance package, introduced for 2009 4x4 V6 models, will also be available on the Sport grade 4x2 and 4x4 models equipped with the 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine in early 2010. The Sport grade models offer a new optional JBL audio system with steering wheel audio controls and hands-free Bluetooth® connectivity.

The Sport Appearance Package gives the Toyota RAV4 Sport grade a sleeker look, with an exclusive rear door design featuring chrome accents and no spare tire. (The package equips the Toyota RAV4 with run-flat tires.) Other external cues include color-keyed power, heated side mirrors with integrated turn signals, a stainless steel exhaust tip and unique badging. Inside, the Sport Appearance Package adds a chrome accented shift knob with a leather insert, chrome interior door handles, parking brake and vent trim, and unique doorsills. For 2010, the Limited grade also adds a chrome parking brake and vent trim.

PERFORMANCE AND EFFICIENCYThe 2010 Toyota RAV4 is offered in three distinct grades – Base, Sport and top-of-the-line Limited – and with a choice between the 2.5-liter four-cylinder that was new for 2009 or the V6 engine. Both engines can be teamed with either front-wheel drive or electronic on-demand four-wheel-drive, giving consumers a wide array of vehicle choices.

The Toyota RAV4's standard 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine is a low-friction design optimized for performance and fuel efficiency. The 2.5-liter engine produces 179 horsepower at 6,000 RPM, along with 172 lb.-ft. of torque at 4,000 RPM, placing it at the high end of standard engines in the segment. Dual independent Variable Valve Timing with intelligence (VVT-i), controls timing on both the intake and exhaust camshafts.

Toyota engineered every aspect of the new 2.5-liter engine for low friction performance. Key low-friction technologies include an offset crankshaft, roller rockers for the valvetrain, a three-stage variable oil pump, reduced-tension piston rings and auxiliary belt drive. Even with the high compression ratio (10.4:1), the 2.5-liter engine uses regular-grade fuel, thanks to optimized cylinder head and piston cooling.
Integrated twin balance shafts reduce noise and vibration.

The Acoustic Control Induction System (ACIS) switches the length of the intake tract in two stages, based on RPM and throttle angle, to ensure strong torque across the engine speed range. Tumble control valves enhance combustion when the engine is cold, helping to warm the catalytic converters quickly. The tumble control valves, along with 12-hole high-atomizing long-nozzle fuel injectors, help to maximize fuel economy and control emissions by reducing the amount of fuel that adheres to the intake ports.

The four-cylinder engine is partnered with a four-speed electronically controlled automatic transmission that was also new for 2009. This transmission is smoother, more lightweight, efficient and responsive than the previous unit, making the Toyota RAV4 more enjoyable to drive. Fuel efficiency is excellent for its class, with EPA MPG estimates of 22 city/28 highway on 4x2 models and 21 city/27 highway on 4x4 models.

An uphill/downhill shift control significantly reduces “hunting” between third and fourth gears during winding uphill driving. Braking on the downhill automatically causes a downshift, which enhances engine braking for better control. A flex lock-up torque converter continuously controls lock-up switch slippage to enhance fuel economy. Toyota WS automatic transmission fluid operates with low viscosity across the potential operating range, reducing resistance and enhancing economy.

The available 3.5-liter V6 is the powerhouse of its segment, generating 269 horsepower at 6,200 RPM and 246 lb.-ft. of peak torque at 4,700 RPM. The V6 is also equipped with dual independent VVT-i to maximize performance and efficiency while reducing emissions. Equipped exclusively with a five-speed automatic transmission, the V6 RAV4 models offer greater fuel efficiency compared to less powerful competitors. The shift logic reduces the frequency of gear shifting during winding uphill and downhill driving. The V6 Toyota RAV4 can accelerate from zero-to-60 mph in under seven seconds, yet has estimated EPA fuel economy MPG ratings of 19 city/27 highway for 4x2 models and 19 city/26 highway for 4x4 models. All RAV4 models meet Ultra Low Emission Vehicle (ULEV II) certification.
2010 Toyota RAV42010 Toyota RAV4
HANDLING AND RIDEA strong, stiff structure, four-wheel independent suspension and Electronic Power Steering (EPS) give the Toyota RAV4 agile, sporty handling and a comfortable car-like ride. The compact EPS unit contributes to fuel economy by eliminating the traditional power steering pump and provide computer-controlled assist only when required.

Furthermore, EPS is interfaced with Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) system to enhance handling control under adverse road conditions. The Toyota RAV4 Base grade model rides on P215/70 R16 tires with 16-inch steel wheels or available P225/65 R17 tires with steel or five-spoke aluminum alloy wheels. The Sport grade, with its standard 18-inch alloy wheels, enhances driving performance with a sport-tuned suspension. The Limited grade rides on P215/65/R17 tires with standard six-spoke aluminum alloy wheels.

The automatic on-demand four-wheel-drive system uses an electronically controlled coupling to distribute torque between the front and rear wheels, depending on road conditions and driver input. The system can continuously and seamlessly switch from front-wheel-drive to four-wheel-drive mode, maximizing fuel efficiency. In Auto mode, torque distribution to the rear wheels is decreased during low speed cornering for better maneuverability.

A 4WD manual locking switch will disengage the Auto mode, maximizing torque distribution to the rear wheels. When vehicle speed reaches 25 mph, the system will revert back to Auto mode. Lock mode also disengages when the brakes are applied, optimizing ABS and VSC operation. Toyota RAV4 4x2 models have a traction control-based automatic limited slip differential (Auto-LSD).

When equipped with a third-row seat, all Toyota RAV4 models come standard with Hill-start Assist Control (HAC) and Downhill Assist Control (DAC). HAC provides additional control for on-road and off-road driving by helping to keep the vehicle stationary while starting on a steep incline or slippery surface; DAC is designed to enhance low-speed descending ability by helping to hold the vehicle to a target speed with minimal intervention from the driver.

SAFETYThe Toyota RAV4 has a reinforced cabin, which includes front and rear crumple zones and energy-absorbing materials on the ceiling and doors. Active headrests on the driver and front passenger seats move up and forward almost instantly in the event of certain rear-end collisions to help reduce the distance between the occupant's head and the headrest. The front three-point seatbelts integrate pretensioners and belt-force limiters. Second- and third-row seats also provide three-point seatbelts and height-adjustable headrests in all seating positions.
The driver and passenger advanced front airbags are designed to inflate according to collision severity. A front seat passenger sensor occupant classification system is designed to determine the seat is occupied and the passenger's weight category and then determines whether the airbag should inflate.

Driver and front passenger front-seat-mounted side airbags and first and second row roll-sensing side curtain airbags are standard. Like all Toyota SUVs in the Toyota lineup, Toyota RAV4 comes standard with the STAR Safety System™ that includes Enhanced Vehicle Stability Control (VSC), Traction Control (TRAC) and Anti-Lock Brake system (ABS) with Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD) and Brake Assist (BA).
In the Toyota RAV4, the enhanced version of VSC interfaces with the Electronic Power Steering (EPS) system to influence steering assist for any given situation. The integration of EPS allows the enhanced VSC system to better anticipate the onset of vehicle loss of control and more effectively respond to driver operation and vehicle behavior.

COMFORT AND CONVENIENCEForm, fun, functionality and value are plentiful in the Toyota RAV4 with a generous array of standard convenience features across all three grades, including air-conditioning; a tilt/telescoping steering wheel; AM/FM CD stereo with six speakers, a universal mini-jack, MP3/WMA playback capability; outside temperature gauge; remote keyless entry; ten bottle/cup holders; power windows and door locks; foldable power mirrors; illuminated entry system; and three 12-volt auxiliary power outlets.

The Limited grade brings a touch of upscale luxury, adding dual zone automatic climate control with air filter; Smart Entry system that allows the driver to open the vehicle by simply carrying the key fob and grasping the door handle; upgraded seat fabric; AM/FM six-disc in-dash CD changer with six speakers and integrated XM® satellite radio, an auxiliary audio jack and MP3/WMA playback capability; engine immobilizer system; interior footwell lighting; leather-wrapped steering wheel with audio controls; leather-wrapped shift knob with metallic insert, and a cargo area tonneau cover.

OPTIONSSome of the standard features in the Limited gradeare available as standalone options on the Base grade, including rear privacy glass, roof rails with cross bars, and a rear cargo area tonneau cover. An optional tow package for V6 models increases towing capacity to a maximum of 3,500 pounds.

Available features on the Sport grade, in addition to those offered on the Base grade, include a power tilt/slide moonroof with sunshade, touch screen DVD navigation system, JBL audio system with hands-free Bluetooth connectivity, leather-trimmed seats, heated front seats, and eight-way power driver seat with adjustable lumbar support. Additionally, the Limited grade offers an available 120V power outlet; and exclusive Blizzard White Pearl exterior paint.

EXTERIOR DESIGNBuilt on a 104.7-inch wheelbase, the roomy Toyota RAV4 offers an optional third-row seating on Base and Limited grade models. The high-strength body structure and exterior details were engineered with a focus on enhancing quiet ride quality. For example, eliminating outer moldings from the windshield and door glass enhances aerodynamics and reduces wind noise. A two-ply hood insulator with a middle air layer helps to further reduce noise transmitted to the cabin.

The Toyota RAV4's contemporary design strongly conveys the Toyota identity in an aerodynamically efficient shape. The grille, headlamps and distinct, sharp character lines give Toyota RAV4 a rugged yet sporty look.

The rear view conveys a more traditional SUV look, with LED tail lamps and an externally mounted spare tire in a color-keyed shell (except Sport Appearance Package). The Toyota RAV4 Sport grade stands apart from the Base grade with P235/55 R18 tires on 18-inch aluminum alloy wheels; color-keyed door handles and fender flares; fog lights; rear privacy glass; smoked headlamp trim; sport-tuned suspension; and unique dark charcoal fabric seats.

The Limited grade is distinguished from the Sport grade by 17-inch aluminum six-spoke alloy wheels with P225/65 R17 tires and a unique front grille with chrome accents, roof rails and cross bars, and color-keyed heated and foldable outside mirrors with turn signal indicators.

INTERIOR DESIGNThe Toyota RAV4 allows for numerous seating configurations, under-floor storage (on models without the third-row seat) and provides a generous 73-cubic foot cargo area with all rear seats folded down.

The 60/40-split second row seat features reclining seatbacks and an armrest with two cup holders. The seats slide fore and aft to maximize room for passengers or cargo. The second row seats fold flat with the convenience of tilt-down levers located on the side of the seatbacks; two-row models include an additional one-touch fold-flat lever in the cargo area. The optional 50/50 Split-and-Stow® third-row seat on Base and Limited grades accommodates two passengers and folds flat under the rear deck.

A brushed metallic silver finish on the center cluster, door trim and steering wheel spokes gives the Toyota RAV4 interior a contemporary style. Three-tiered Optitron gauges provide an upscale look. Useful touches are also evident with the addition of a large vanity mirror with "eye-friendly" ceiling lights, illumination on two extra-large front cup holders and a cell phone holder in the center console. The Limited grade offers an additional level of refinement with an air conditioning vent dial, chrome accented air conditioning vent garnish and a chrome parking brake tip.

Like all Toyota SUVs, the Toyota 4Runner (Surf) comes standard with the advanced STAR SAFETY SYSTEM™, which includes Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) and Traction Control (TRAC), an anti-lock brake system (ABS) with Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD), and Brake Assist.

"Through four vehicle generations over more than 20 years, the Toyota 4Runner (Surf) has become a benchmark for the midsize SUV segment," said Jim Lentz, Toyota Motor Sales executive vice president. "4Runner gives the driver the confidence and comfort to handle virtually any kind of driving condition."

The Toyota 4Runner (Surf) is offered in three grade levels: the SR5, the Sport Edition that features a distinct appearance and enhanced handling performance, and the Limited grade with additional comfort amenities. The Toyota 4Runner (Surf) seats up to seven with an available third-row seat option on SR5 and Limited models. The seat can fold over or be removed when additional cargo space is needed.

The most popular Toyota 4Runner (Surf) model, the SR5, is distinguished by a chrome grille, door handles and rear license plate garnish. The SR5 is also equipped with standard fog lamps, black running boards, and six-spoke 16-inch alloy wheels with P265/70R16 tires – including a full-size spare tire with alloy wheel.
The Toyota 4Runner Sport Edition stands out with a hood scoop, smoked chrome grille and headlight bezels, tubular roof rack and side steps, and six-spoke 17-inch alloy wheels with P265/65R17 raised white letter tires. The 4Runner (Surf) Limited is distinguished by a color-keyed grille and heated power mirrors, black roof rack, black illuminated running boards, and six-spoke 18-inch alloy wheels.

Powerful Engines, Sophisticated Four-Wheel Drive
The 2007 Toyota 4Runner (Surf) is available with a choice of powerful V6 or V8 engines, in 2WD and 4WD models. The Toyota 4Runner's (Surf) standard 4.0-liter dual overhead cam (DOHC) V6 engine produces 236 horsepower, with 266 lb-ft. of torque at 4,000 rpm. The available 4.7-liter i-Force DOHC V8 produces 260 horsepower, with 306 lb-ft. of torque at 3,400 rpm. In both engines, variable valve timing with intelligence (VVT-i) helps provide substantial low-end and mid-range torque. The advanced standard five-speed automatic transmission in all models provides seamless shift quality. Shift logic holds gears on inclines for power and on descents for increased engine braking, which can be helpful when towing. Artificial Intelligence (AI) shift control changes gear-shifting patterns according to driving conditions and driver input.

An automatic Limited-Slip Differential (LSD) is standard on 2WD models for improved traction in slippery conditions. Four-wheel drive Toyota 4Runner (Surf) models employ a Torsen® torque-sensing type limited-slip center differential with locking feature. The main difference between the V6 and V8 4WD is that the V6 uses a Multi-Mode selectable system, and the V8's 4WD is strictly a full-time system. In addition, both models are equipped with a two-speed transfer case with low range for handling steep off-highway inclines.
In both systems, the Torsen® differential distributes 60 percent of available power to the rear wheels under most conditions and changes the ratio as needed based on steering input and wheel slip. Automatically shifting to a 29:71 power distribution ratio during steering maneuvers helps to enhance vehicle tracking through curves. The center differential can change the ratio to 53:47 to help control rear wheel slippage. The Torsen® differential makes the 4Runner less prone to slippage caused by sudden changes in road conditions.
Downhill Assist Control (DAC) is designed to augment the low-speed descending ability of low-range by holding the vehicle to a target speed with no intervention from the driver. Hill-start Assist Control (HAC), standard on all models, provides additional control for off-road driving by helping to keep the vehicle stationary while starting on a steep incline or slippery surface.

Rugged Chassis, Smooth Ride
The Toyota 4Runner's (Surf) rugged body-on-frame construction utilizes full-length boxed section frame rails that use large diameter body mounts for high torsional rigidity and excellent cabin noise isolation. On V8 models, a standard tow hitch receiver bolts directly to the rear frame crossmember. A draw bar, a high-capacity seven-pin electrical connector for trailer wiring, and pre-wiring for an electric trailer brake controller are also included as standard equipment.

Suspension is by double wishbones in the front and a four-link rigid type suspension in the rear, both systems with coil springs over gas shock absorbers. The Toyota 4Runner Limited V8 4WD model can be equipped with rear auto-leveling air suspension for improved ride and performance when towing or carrying heavy loads. This option is teamed with the unique X-REAS Sport Enhancement Suspension that is also standard on the Toyota 4Runner (Surf) Sport Edition.

The X-REAS Sport Enhancement Suspension diagonally links the compression chambers of the shock absorbers (front left shock linked to rear right and front right linked to rear left) by a center control absorber. The system helps improve on-road handling and dampens body roll and pitch by passing small body motions from front-to-rear to increase overall vertical shock damping.

Towing capacity is 5,000 lbs. for V6 models, 7,000 lbs. for V8 4WD models and 7,300 lbs. for V8 2WD models. All Toyota 4Runner (Surf) models are equipped with skid plates for the engine and fuel tank, and 4WD models add one for the transfer case, as well.

Sophisticated Dynamic Control with STAR SAFETY SYSTEM™
The STAR SAFETY SYSTEM™ includes VSC, TRAC, ABS with EBD and Brake Assist to help provide optimal vehicle control and driving safety. Four-channel, four-sensor ABS helps to preserve steering control by preventing the wheels from locking during severe braking situations, while EBD distributes proper brake force between the front and rear wheels according to driving conditions. Brake Assist is designed to determine if the driver is attempting emergency braking and, if the driver has not stepped firmly enough on the brake pedal to engage the (ABS), the system supplements the applied braking power.

The Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) system helps keep the Toyota 4Runner (Surf) going on the driver's intended course by detecting front-wheel slide and rear-wheel slide during cornering and attempting to control either condition with torque intervention and/or by braking individual wheels. The traction control (TRAC) feature helps reduce tire slippage during acceleration. Toyota 4Runner (Surf) 4WD models use an additional yaw sensor, a deceleration sensor, and control algorithms to deliver smoother torque on any surface, including low-range and locked center differential conditions.

Safety and Convenience Features
Driver and passenger advanced dual-stage front airbags inflate according to collision severity. A front passenger seat sensor verifies if there is a certain amount of weight in the seat to determine whether the airbag should inflate, and the correct inflation power. Available front and second row side curtain and front seat-mounted side airbags are equipped with a rollover sensor and cutoff switch.

Cargo-area mirrors located on the D-pillars help provide enhanced visibility when reversing. The optional navigation system also includes a rear backup camera that automatically projects an image of what its lens can detect behind the vehicle onto the navigation system's seven-inch LCD screen when reverse gear is engaged.

Spacious and Versatile Interior
Sporty design and extensive convenience features highlight the Toyota 4Runner's (Surf) spacious and versatile interior. The two-tone dashboard houses a three-pod instrument cluster with orange illumination. A vehicle level sensor detects when the Toyota 4Runner is on an incline and compensates the fuel gauge reading. All exterior glass shields 94 percent or more of UV rays, and water-repellent glass is used for the windshield, side windows, and side mirrors.

An automatic climate-control system is standard on all models, with the Limited grade adding dual-zone temperature control in front. A multi-information display, located just above the climate control panel, shows the climate control status as well as a clock, outside temperature, fuel range meter, average speed, and average fuel consumption.

The 60/40-split fold-down rear seatbacks fold flat easily with no need to remove the headrests. An extra-wide fold-down rear seat center armrest integrates a pull-out convenience tray with two cupholders. Interior storage includes large bins in all doors.

When Toyota 4Runner (Surf) is equipped with the available third row seats, the middle row tumbles forward for easy third row access. The rear gate's standard power window includes jam protection, as well as an electric power close function to ensure it is not left partially ajar.

The large rear storage area provides steel tie-down hooks on the floor with additional storage hooks on the sidewalls. A "double decker" cargo system with cargo net is standard on Toyota 4Runner (Surf) Limited and optional for other models. The cargo shelf can lie flat or be lifted up easily with one hand and locked in place to accommodate larger cargo items (up to 66 pounds).

Toyota Value in All Grades
Standard equipment for the Toyota 4Runner (Surf) SR5 model includes cruise control, power door locks and windows (including rear gate window) with driver's auto up/down function, two 12v outlets, remote keyless entry with rear hatch window power-down operation, a rear tonneau cover and illuminated entry.

The Toyota 4Runner (Surf) Sport Edition adds a tilt and telescoping steering wheel, high-contrast fabric-trimmed seats and trim, a leather-wrapped steering wheel with audio controls and cruise control buttons, plus a leather-wrapped shift knob. The V8 SR5 and the Sport Edition also come equipped with standard power-adjustable front seats, which are optional for the SR5 V6 models.

The Limited steps up the luxury factor with black wood grain-style interior trim, leather-trimmed seats, heated front seats, a seat memory system, anti-theft system with engine immobilizer, HomeLink® universal garage door opener, and an auto-dimming rear-view mirror with compass.

The available power moonroof with jam protection features a two-stage automatic wind deflector to help minimize wind noise. The deflector lowers to an intermediate height when the Toyota 4Runner is traveling over 55 mph and rises to full height again when vehicle speed drops below 45 mph and the roof is fully open.
